It hadn't always been this way. During the late 1990s and early 2000s he could usually be found in London's less fashionable rehearsal rooms, enthusiastically helping a succession of commercially ambitious bands achieve the remarkable feat of selling almost no records whatsoever. There were hopeful showcases attended by disinterested A&R executives, tours where the audience occasionally outnumbered the band, and enough unpaid "career opportunities" to qualify for a pension in disappointment.
