Day 3 - Breakfast With Santa

Day 3 - Breakfast With Santa

I had the idea for this track after seeing a notice for 'Breakfast with Santa' now booking at a local hostelry near where I live (in early October, naturally!)

I needed a new song for the compilation and up until then I'd struggled for a subject matter. One of those rare songs where the chords and lyrics came fairly swiftly, once I'd decided that 'Santa' was a controlling husband and this was the story of the mental and physical abuse of someone trapped in a loveless marriage.

The lyric explores the notion that the female in the story has to put up with unwanted advances from her spouse, once again coming home drunk after a night out, potentially in the very early hours when everyone else is enjoying a seasonal breakfast.

The children are not oblivious to this scenario - hence 'playing up downstairs' - (apologies Madness for stealing this genius of a line) - but making no noise, so as to avoid upsetting their inebriated parent.

A reminder that Christmas isn't always 'jolly' for everyone.

lyrics

She's having breakfast with Santa Claus this year
"You've been a very, very good girl"
He whispered in her ear
The kids have said their prayers, gone up to bed
And here comes Father Christmas, all dressed in red

She's having breakfast with Santa Claus today
He's been a very, very bad boy
Fallen from his sleigh
The kids have had their presents, and Rudolph said goodbye
And here comes Father Christmas, singing 'Silent Night'

She's having breakfast with Santa Claus again
She's been a very, very quiet girl
Nothing to be said
The kids are playing up downstairs, but make no noise
And here comes Father Christmas, with his bag of toys
