Day 9 - Another Christmas Song
Day 9 - Another Christmas Song
This track developed from wanting a bouncy, jaunty Christmas song - musical content above lyrical content. I'd been listening to the Elefant Records Christmas album, and found that there were such delightful, joyous and triumphant melodies which were somewhat lacking in my own efforts.
Once I'd written my 'bouncy' melody I decided to counteract that with a bitter lyric - so I set the scene of typical Christmas tropes and then rallied against them, under the guise of a broken relationship (Hazey Janey - apologies Nick Drake!)
Although it sounds as if the narrator is wallowing in self-pity and can't stand the thought of children singing, snow, silent nights et al the twist comes right at the end ... it was their fault the relationship failed and they ended up with their just desserts!

lyrics
Everybody wants to see
Presents, cards and a Christmas tree
It’s over
For another year or more
Everybody count the days
Twenty-five December’s hazey
Janey
She’s walking out the door
I can hear the children say
A silent night and Santa’s sleigh
Will bring us
Peace throughout the earth
I can’t stand another word
Under candlelight I heard
“Goodbye now”
Take back what it’s worth
Everybody’s happy now
Jingle Bells and snow’s absurd
Without you
You never really cared
I can’t hear a Christmas song
Without the need to sing along
Together
I got what I deserved
